As Super Bowl LIX commences on Feb. 9 in New Orleans, millions will watch Kansas City Chiefs play the Philadelphia Eagles.
Whether you’re in it for the game, the food, or the halftime show, here are numbers to explain everything you need to know about the big game.
The Game
- The NFL is the most popular professional sport, according to a survey by Morning Consult. The data services company found that 34% of Americans would consider themselves avid fans, while 28% say they’re casual fans of the pro football league.
- More fans want to see the Eagles dethrone Kansas, the two-time reigning champions, according to a survey from betting statistics site Odds Assist. They found that 47.3% of viewers want the Eagles to win, while 34.6% are rooting for the Chiefs, and 18.1% don’t have a preference.
- Both teams have been in the running for the Lombardi Trophy in recent years. Kansas City Chiefs have played in five of the past six Super Bowls, including this year, while the Eagles have been in the Super Bowl four times since 2005.
- That dominance could be taking away some of the fun for viewers as AI marketing firm Zeta Global analyzed consumer behavior and found that interest in the game is down 14% from last year.
The Gambling
- Americans are expected to legally bet $1.39 billion on the game, according to the American Gaming Association. The industry group said that would be the highest total on record.
- Households spent an average of $1,100 a year on sports betting between 2018 and 2023, according to the Kellogg School of Management.
- According to the betting statistics website Covers, the single largest bet on the game thus far is a $800,000 money line bet on the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Food
- Looking for a place to watch the game? You’d be in luck in St. Cloud, Minnesota, as it has 10 times the average concentration of sports bars, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
- Whether you’re at a sports bar or a party, you’re likely to be eating while watching. What’s on the menu? Well, according to Odds Assist, pizza and wings are most likely to make an appearance as 29.7% and 28.5% of survey respondents planned on eating them, respectively.
- The National Chicken Council said they expect 1.47 billion chicken wings will be consumed.
- But you can’t forget the dip. According to industry group Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin, about 29 million pounds of cheese will be eaten, some in the form of cheese dip. About 20% of all avocado sales each year happen during Super Bowl weekend, according to agricultural platform Produce Pay. That’s a lot of guacamole.
The Ads
- Last year, 120 million people tuned into the game, making it the most-watched Super Bowl ever, according to Wells Fargo.
- Wells Fargo found that the cost of a 30-second ad is now 15 times more costly than it was during the very first Super Bowl in 1967.
- More people are planning on streaming the broadcast of the game. Advertising firm LG Ad Solutions found that 59% of viewers will stream the Super Bowl.
The Taylor Swift of It All
- More than half (54%) of respondents to a survey by consulting firm Savanta said that the media has paid too much attention to Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce’s relationship with pop superstar Taylor Swift.
- Odds Assist found that one-fourth of viewers say Taylor Swift’s involvement makes them want to watch the Super Bowl less and another quarter say it makes them want to watch it more.
- According to BetMGM, the odds that Travis Kelce will propose to Taylor Swift at the big game are +800 and the odds against are -2000. Polymarket betters give it a 7% chance he pops the question.
