Dozens of people are dead after a bus fell into a ravine on the outskirts of Guatemala City, according to the local fire department.

At least 30 people were killed, according to Reuters, citing a fire department spokesperson. Social media posts from the fire department indicated that more than five people were dead, and four survivors had been found.

Newsweek has contacted the fire department via email for further comment.

The bus plummeted about 20 meters from Puente Belice, a highway bridge spanning a road and creek on a busy route to and from the city, Reuters reported.

Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo declared there would be a period of national mourning following the incident.

“I stand in solidarity with the families of the victims who today woke up to heartbreaking news,” he said in a post on X, formerly Twitter. “Their pain is my pain.”

Arévalo also said he was sending the army and the National Coordination for Disaster Reduction agency to the site to assist.
