TAIPEI — A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck southern Taiwan early Tuesday, authorities said, prompting chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. to evacuate some of its factories.
The epicenter was near the city of Chiayi, close to Tainan, where TSMC operates clusters of its most advanced chip plants supplying artificial intelligence and mobile processors to Nvidia, Apple, Advanced Micro Devices and other global companies.
