MAYSVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Health insurance coverage for thousands of families across North Carolina will be coming to an end this summer.
The North Carolina League recently let people know its Health Benefits Trust coverage will stop on June 30th. Maysville Town Manager Schumata Brown says he’s shocked by the change.
“It was a big surprise and a little disappointing hearing it,” said Brown. “I understand that the process is a decision like that don’t come lightly.”
The decision will stop providing health insurance like vision, dental and more to town and city employees. Swansboro Town Manager Jonathan Barlow will also see the impact.
“Who’s in that work?” said Barlow. “That’s going to be a big question for us, you know, here in Onslow County, is make sure that you know the doctors they’re used to will be in that plan we choose so that will be something we look at.”
WITN reached out to other areas in Duplin, Jones and Onslow County. Richlands, Pink Hill, Warsaw and Kenansville are a few who say they are finding new coverage after losing the NC League.
The change will impact 8,000 families in the state. Brown says now is the time to change after being with the company for a while.
“We are actively looking for another vendor to offer these benefits,” said Brown. “Where there won’t be any coverage, but again it was a huge surprise when we got the email.”
When it comes to finding a new coverage plan, Barlow says he’s keeping his employees in mind.
“The coverage we have now with the league everybody really likes it,” said Barlow. “It’s really good, I mean obviously that’s why we’ve stayed with them the last 8 years so hopefully it will be a seamless change.”
Not all communities in the east are impacted, including Holly Ridge, Pollocksville, Greenville and New Bern.
