Massachusetts tax filers have an estimated $26.5 million in unclaimed refunds from the 2021 tax year, according to the Internal Revenue Service.
But the deadline to claim it is April 15.
Here’s how you can check if you’re owed any money from 2021.
A March 11 IRS announcement claimed that over 1.1 million people across the country have unclaimed refunds from the 2021 tax year — totaling more than $1 billion.
These taxpayers were flagged for either failing to file their 2021 income taxes or for not claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit, which provides tax benefits to low and moderate-income families with children.
Federal law requires taxpayers to claim their refunds within three years. If a refund is not filed within that time, the unclaimed revenue will be added to the U.S. Treasury.
Eligible taxpayers have until April 15 to claim their refunds from the 2021 tax year.
According to the IRS, an estimated 27,000 taxpayers in Massachusetts have unclaimed refunds from the 2021 tax year, with a median potential refund of $936. The total potential unclaimed refunds for Massachusetts are $26,581,100.
People who need to file their 2021 tax return or add the Earned Income Tax Credit to their 2021 taxes can do so on the IRS website’s Individual Online Account. The website contains tax records, gross income data, and tax compliance reports. It can also show whether or not a person has filed previous taxes.
Individuals may also request copies of tax information needed to complete the 2021 filing from their previous employers. To request a wage and income transcript directly from the IRS, [eople can file a Form 4506-T.
