Details on Kruger National Park in South Africa
Kruger National Park is one of the most popular tourist attractions for wildlife on the continent, with an estimated two million visitors a year.
It is the playground of the “Big Five,” which includes the elephant, lion, leopard, rhino, and buffalo.
The park offers guided tours and self-drive options but warns visitors not to get out of their vehicles when not at a designated camp.
“As soon as you leave your vehicle you step into the territory of wild animals,” the park’s website says. “When you are inside your vehicle the wild animals will not fear you – letting you observe them in safety. As soon as you step outside your vehicle you become a threat to them. Even when you can’t see any animals around, you should never get out of your vehicle, as long grass can conceal dangerous snakes etc.”
Another tourist died last year at a national park in Zambia
Last year, an American tourist died after an “aggressive” bull elephant attacked a vehicle during a tour at Kafue National Park in Zambia.
The 80-year-old woman was in the vehicle with other guests and a guide during the game drive. Videos and photos show when the wild animal flipped the car on its side.
Other occupants suffered injuries from the attack.
